Diabetes mellitus is a major global public health concern, with rising prevalence rates, particularly in developing countries such as Nigeria. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that diabetes cases in sub-Saharan Africa will continue to increase due to factors such as urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, and dietary changes (WHO, 2024). Effective management of diabetes requires a multi-disciplinary approach, with nurse practitioners playing a significant role in delivering patient-centered care, education, and disease management interventions (Adeyemi & Usman, 2023).
In Bauchi State, diabetes remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, with many patients experiencing complications due to poor disease management and limited access to healthcare services (Hassan & Sanni, 2024). Nurse practitioners, who are advanced practice registered nurses, have been increasingly involved in diabetes care, offering services such as patient education, medication management, blood glucose monitoring, and lifestyle counseling. Their interventions have been linked to improved patient outcomes, including better glycemic control and reduced hospital admissions (Okafor & Musa, 2024).
Despite the crucial role of nurse practitioners in diabetes management, there is limited empirical evidence on the effectiveness of their interventions in Bauchi State. This study seeks to assess the impact of nurse practitioner-led interventions on diabetes management, with a focus on patient outcomes, adherence to treatment, and quality of life improvements.
Diabetes management in Bauchi State faces numerous challenges, including poor patient adherence to medication, lack of structured diabetes education programs, and limited access to specialized healthcare providers. While nurse practitioners are increasingly involved in diabetes care, there is little research assessing their effectiveness in improving patient outcomes.
Without evaluating the impact of nurse practitioner-led interventions, it is difficult to determine whether their contributions are making a significant difference in diabetes management or whether additional strategies are required to enhance care delivery. This study seeks to bridge this knowledge gap by examining the effectiveness of nurse practitioner-led interventions in Bauchi State.
H₀: Nurse practitioner-led interventions have no significant impact on glycemic control among diabetes patients in Bauchi State.
H₁: Nurse practitioner-led interventions have a significant impact on glycemic control among diabetes patients in Bauchi State.
H₀: Nurse practitioners do not significantly improve patient adherence to diabetes management plans.
H₁: Nurse practitioners significantly improve patient adherence to diabetes management plans.
H₀: Nurse practitioner-led education programs have no significant effect on the quality of life of diabetes patients.
H₁: Nurse practitioner-led education programs have a significant effect on the quality of life of diabetes patients.
This study focuses on diabetes patients receiving care from nurse practitioners in primary healthcare centers and hospitals in Bauchi State. Limitations may include variations in patient compliance, differences in healthcare facility resources, and potential biases in self-reported patient outcomes.
